September 2014

I just wanted to share a picture of my New England Aster Plant. It’s not opened all the way as of yet, I’ll update it later. This was one of the plants that Eugene Bemis’ family donated to our June BINGO picnic, in his memory. I have a little stick next to the plant that his family put in the pot, saying it’s in memory of Eugene. It’s growing in SAND at our cottage. Nice!

August 2014

August 2nd and 3rd, 2014Bee Club members, Kurt Vollmer and Kurt and Kathy Petersen, volunteered time with the Wisconsin Honey Producers at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis. Kurt V. worked Saturday night and Kurt and Kathy worked the day shift on Sunday. It was very busy with lots of people asking lots of questions. There were many varieties of honey and honey products available, with lots of sales. The sales benefit the Wisconsin Honey Producers Association! Their booth will be at the fair through August 10th, at the Wisconsin Products Pavillion!

Member Kurt Petersen recently shared his knowledge of beekeeping with students at Sheridan Elementary School in Sheboygan. The students had the presentation in conjunction with their Plant Unit in Science. They learned about the beekeeper, necessary tools, important parts of the hive, and possible products using beeswax!

Club member, Kurt Vollmer, visited St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sheboygan Falls to talk to the pre-school kids about honey bees. These bright minds already knew that honey bees made honey, and can sting; but during the presentation they learned that honey bees play an important role in making other yummy foods we all like to eat, such as apples, strawberries, watermelon and chocolate!

These kids learned that beekeepers are like doctors for honey bees; and like doctors, the beekeeper’s job is to make sure the honey bees are healthy. The kids also learned about the special equipment beekeepers use to inspect honey bee hives, and had a lot of fun trying out the equipment first hand.
